We need to buy a small, inexpensive home for a relative in her 50s, physically able. School district no concern, but the area must be safe for a woman to live alone. Prefer no more than 45 min commute to a major city. Work is mostly contract work done on home computer, has a car. Family is in Boston area, Upper Cape, and central CT. Outside of Providence would work. Any recommendations?

Attleboro would be the first place I'd look. Just avoid the downtown/east side and a few pockets along Rte. 152 (they are not dangerous per se, but low income and come with all the associated side effects). It is a small, well run city just outside of Providence. In MA close to Providence you will not find better value, and the taxes are very reasonable for MA as well. She will have everything close by and I get the impression that Attleboro has good services for the elderly, which is important if she is to plan for long term.

This makes good sense. Come to think of it, the health insurance issue comes into play, too. Any recommendations of realtors?

Not at this time sorry.

Anywhere in the Attleboro area would work but you will get the most bang for your buck in Attleboro itself. Like the previous poster said, it is a city and there are some not so nice areas, but there are nice, safe areas as well. The city is undergoing a downtown renovation and it's returning to life thanks to several new shops and restaurants that recently opened (although a new meth clinic just opened as well ). Briggs Corner and Mortgage Hill are nice areas. I just moved from Briggs Corner which is a very nice, safe area. Dodgeville is decent as well. Avoid the East side and South Attleboro.

Our realtor is Dan Thibault. He sold our house after only a week on the market so we are quite pleased! He works for RE Max. His website is Dan-at-Remax.com
Good luck!

Avoid South Attleboro? Has always been very decent for the most part, as long as you are away from Rte. 1 and all the noise. Unless things have changed substantially in the past few years?

I'd avoid South Attleboro, too.

Lived in S. Attleboro 10 years ago with zero problems, neighbors were great (this was 1/8 mile from the Pawtucket line). Some of the more tucked away streets have an almost "Mayberry, USA" feel to them. It was great having every daily necessity a 2 minute car ride away and also be able to hop right on I 95 and be in downtown Providence in 10 minutes. The worst you ever hear happening around there is maybe a local gas station being held up (it borders an urban area and has quick highway access).

Just saying that I don't think the whole area should be written off, you could do much worse.
