Very expensive. Gas is pushing the limits of $4 a gallon. You have to be prepared for isolation. It is dead in the winter. It's an absolute madhouse in the summer. Not much, I would say, for the kids, at least in the off-season. If you like fishing and drinking, great. Since the increase in fuel costs, the price of goods have risen substantially. Even a cab ride for a few miles is $20. I send stuff over there every day in my business. The people over there find it cheaper to call "off island" and buy it from us and pay a local freight boat to bring it over to them. It's still cheaper then purchasing it over there. Even still, I've been over there a few times looking to collect on past due accounts. The court house in Edgartown is a busy place.

The ferry trip is short, but you might as well be a hundred miles away. The place is fast becoming overrun with Brazilian illegal immigrants. They go over there to work, as it's better money and cheaper still than Nantucket. Crime is still a problem with locals, drugs and alcohol abuse is very high.

Beautiful place. The fortunate love it there. But then again, they can afford it.

I liked Nantucket better than the Vineyard. However, most will never,
have a choice but to visit. The Vineyard, and maybe Nantucket are not too happy with people who were not born, and raised their. Then, you are on the island, which, when summer ends is either peacefull, or boring and lonely.

Most young people even born on either island need to leave. Why: jobs, cost of living, and maybe even now to buy home insurance? To really know, visit in the winter. Even Cape Cod is super expensive. You do need major money!

Depends where on Cape Cod. I find mid, lower and outer more expensive. I live in Bourne and don't find it any more expensive than over the bridge. I also like it because it's convenient if I want to go to Providence or Boston. Also easy access to the ferry for MV. A lot of people work on the Vineyard but live in Falmouth or Bourne.
