This was from this morning in Fitchburg. Are Moose common in the state? I remember having one down by the CT coast(which is rare) but I'm surprised I dont hear much about them in northern CT.

There was a moose on the loose in Holyoke on Thursday or Friday. Forget which one,but it is really not that common.

They have Moose crossing signs on 190 between Worcester and Leominster, so there must at least be some in MA. Never seen one myself other than in Maine and NH though.

They're getting pretty common in Central Mass, I see them pretty often while on patrol.

There was a young bull roaming the Suasco shores as far south as West Concord but it was hit by a car crossing Route 3.

Yup they've been wandering into Fitchburg for years! Nothing but woods leading straight to NH north of the city. Have seen them in Ashburnham, Florida, and New Marlborough MA - one dead on the side of Route 2 in Westminster some years back Often see signs of them all around the North Quabbin region and Quabbin Reservoir itself, but actually seeing them is a little more rare.

New Marlborough is right on the CT border, so that one was pretty far south!

Within the last ten years, there was a young moose loose in Newton near BC. I think that the authorities were finally able to catch it. Maybe it followed the railroad lines down from up north.

Not so common that people don't take notice, but more common than they used to be. I think it might be the climate change.
There was one on the Littleton Common a few years ago, and it made headlines.
The further west on Rt.2, the more likely you are to see them, and need to watch for them (and deer) driving.
Once when I was driving south on 95 towards Portland (in 1979) I saw two moose heading onto the interstate down a hill, in broad daylight. People were slamming on their brakes. I'd never seen one, and at first thought, "Those are weird horses coming onto the highway." My next thought was, "They look just like Bullwinkle!" I asked the toll guy at Portland if they ever saw any moose, and he said, no, that was only further north. I said I had just seen two nearby, and he ventured that they get disoriented in warm weather.

I moved from Massachusetts back in 1997, and the year before we left, there was a moose wandering around our neighborhood in Haverhill. People to think of Haverhill as an urban center, but it's actually on the NH border, and there are many large tracts of woods/fields. Still, it was an odd enough occurrence that we all remember when it happened...

We've been in Londonderry (southern NH) for about 10 years, and last spring, a young moose was wandering through the Home Depot parking lot, and through one of the 55+ developments that have been springing to completion in the area. They do seem to be wandering further south, probably due to their habitat being taken over with development...

About 10 or 12 years ago, as I recall it, there was a moose in the woods near the Rt 128, Rt 109 interchange in Westwood. That moose ended up being shot to death by authorities after it wandered onto the side of 128 and the tranquilizer shots either missed or didn't take hold quickly enough to be sure it wasn't going to run out onto the southbound lanes of 128.
