My husband is considering taking a job in Boston, in Metro-West in teh fall. Currently we live in NJ, and I'm having trouble.

Our top interests for our kids are a top Catholic elementary school and a good place to raise a family. We loved touring the Jackson School in Newton, but don't know if we could afford Newton.

Our budget would be in the mid $600s. Commute up to 45 would be fine.

Thanks for any help

There's really no shortage of parochial schools in the area, so I'd focus on community first, school second, personally.

600k is reasonable, but it also depends on what you're looking for as far as a house. 600k in Newton gets you decent condo, or a small house in a less desirable area of the city.

I guess my point is, in order to advise you we'd need to know specifically where your commute is going to be to with in the city, and also what your housing/community requirements are.

Hi Sophie22,

Just my two cents... My Husband and I visited MA in January of 2011, we're trying to move to MA from California. We don't have any children yet, but we are looking for a nice community with a good parochial option (as the school systems in MA are much better than other parts of the nation, we are hoping that a parochial school will be a good back up, just in case.)

We explored north of Boston (not north shore though), south of Boston, south shore, and the Metro-West area. Metro West was really our favorite. Based on what we saw, and what your criteria are (although I'm not sure where your work locations will be located), I would recommend looking into Norwood (we loved it), Natick (also great), people rave about Franklin (but we didn't really see what the big deal was) or Marlborough (depending on how far out in Metro-West you can be without making for a terrible commute).

Incidentally, I'm from northern New Jersey originally, and can't wait to get back to the east coast.... My Husband and I really want to raise our family more along the lines of the environment we were raised in... But, I just couldn't see moving back to northern NJ, I need to be able to have peace and quiet if needs be, and the property taxes are shocking!

Good luck on your move!
