So wife and I decided we like Sudbury as our move-to town but I will likely be commuting into Kendall. As best as I can tell I can
1) Drive to Lincoln, commuter rail into porter, redline in
2) Drive 90, exit Cambridge
3) Drive route 2 from Concord straight to Cambridge
My hunch is all 3 ways is about 1 hour commute. Any thoughts? Sudbury is non-negotiable because L/T I don't see myself in Kendall more than 2-3 years and probably working around metrowest afterwards.
All of them are painful.
Traffic is hard in that area, either way you might be spending more than hour easily.
Train is not bad idea, but in reality you need to make sure there will be parking spot for you in Lincoln (it is town owned MBTA parking) and then go from there.
Good luck!
Depending on what time you intend to travel, I90 will probably afford you the least pain and would be the quickest most consistently. After you get off in Cambridge, I'd stay on Storrow Drive on the Boston side of the Charles and double back into Kendall Square over the Longfellow.
Another option (again depending on your time of travel) is Route 2 into Alewife and Red Line from there. This can be a royal pain, however, particularly during inclement weather.
Lastly, MIT runs a commuter shuttle from Lincoln Labs near Hanscom Air Force Base. If you have an MIT affiliation and you can match your calendar to suit, this is also a great option to explore. Parking is free, and the shuttle drops off right on Main Street in Kendall Square.
hken: have you taken the commuter rail before? Everyone is different, but I would take the commuter rail in a heartbeat over driving. Depending on what part of Sudbury you're looking at, it might be quicker to drive to Concord instead of Lincoln although Lincoln does have more empty spots in their lot. Also, Lincoln is a zone 4 pass compared to Concord which is zone 5, so that is about $20-30 cheaper per month.
What about Rt. 117 to Rt. 20 in Waltham? Then in Watertown Square get on Arsenal St. going straight until it turns into Western Ave. and cross the Charles River etc...
I timed your commute this morning because I was curious. I was in Sudbury on the corner of Union Ave & Concord Rd at 7:50am. I drove to Lincoln station, parked and was on the outbound platform by 8:12. Waited 3 minutes for the 8:15 train. Arrived at Porter Square at 8:43 and boarded the inbound red line train at 8:45. Got to Kendall Station at 8:58AM. That's 1 hour 8 minutes plus the walk to your office. You can shave 7 minutes off your commute if you take the express train to Porter (leaves Lincoln at 7:50am). I know this is probably slightly longer than driving, but you will save money on gas/parking and sitting for 30 min on the commuter rail is very relaxing. It's all chaos after you get off at Porter though.

Reason: fixed time on red line
