I always perferred to access Boston from Rt. 2, opposed to the pike. Much better drive and no tolls.

With that in mind, I would love to live Shelburn Falls, Deerfield, Burnardson, Conway, or Northfield. Rural but close to Greenfield and loaded with culture and activities.

I almost forgot.............Deerfield. Dream place to live. I did know someone who moved to Shelburne Falls and moved out again because the people were unfriendly and it was a nice place to visit but you wouldn't want to live there. Also, you were totally isolated in winter way out on rte 2. Couldn't go anywhere.

Does anyone know what part of the state I can find land for less then $5000/acre? I'm trying to build a house on about 2 acres of land to build a house and small farm. Any resources or websites I can find good deals on? Thanks

As someone who grew up in a rural part of the Berkshires (Richmond), I would highly suggest that you rent in a rural area before buying. I used to see New Yorkers come and go every year, thinking they wanted the peace and quiet of the country, only to realize how much they miss being somewhere more vibrant, being able to walk to things, and also realizing that rural isnt necessarily more quiet or peaceful. Neighbors with riding lawnmowers, chain saws, tractors, etc. Another biggie is mosquitoes - you literally can not hang outside at night in the summer in wooded areas without dousing yourself in DEET, so make sure you have a screened in porch.
