Oh I know. Marlborough was on my list of affordable AND decent Massachusetts towns during my last house hunt.

Best Places to Live 2011 - Town details: Marlborough, MA - from MONEY Magazine

I guess Marlboro went way downhill in the last two years.

It's always interesting how people will badmouth an ENTIRE city like Lowell, yet when it comes to Boston (which has among the worst hoods in the state) only select areas get mentioned (giving the rest of the city a free pass). What's wrong, too scared to pick on the big boy?

Because it does not make Money's list of 100 best places to live?

I believe that was sarcasm.

Thanks for the insult, but I actually get out that's why I know which areas to avoid. Good day to you.

The fact that you think Marlboro is more dangerous than Lawrence or Springfield shows that you do not. The others aren't even top twenty five neighborhoods (as Allston and Brighton are part of Boston) to avoid if you're going to get that specific. Good day to you.

massnative71: Boston is a big place, so it has good and bad neighborhoods.

Timberline: Clearly jewban has a Boston centric view. (someone who doesn't have a car?) Including Allston on the list is just odd. I tend to think small bad cities are way, way worse then bad areas of Boston. (In Boston you always have a smattering of students and young professionals who are there for cheap rents and short commutes...in a few of the worst cities there is no reason for anyone who doesn't have to be to live there.

People who lived in these areas 20 years ago have an entirely different take. I've heard Salem and Glocester weren't that great a few decades ago. Lots of areas in Boston are way better courtesy of gentrification. Also remember, having kids changes everything. You can find some really nice parts of Brockton...but your kids would still be going to the Brockton school system. (Also a reason people count Boston differently...so many schools, your kid won't always be in the same schools...) Childless young adults often spend little time in their town except when they are asleep.
