Drove through Lynn yesterday. Still looks like a sh!thole.

Miles and miles of run-down homes and chain strip malls, with shady characters walking down the streets. You definitely wouldn't know you're in New England in one of the wealthiest states in the country from driving around Lynn.

You wouldn't know that New England is 6 states, would you?

Uh, my point was that Lynn doesn't have many of the New England charms that people associate. Nice try at being a smartass.

To expect that every single city/town in a state to look like Wellesley is unrealistic.

To its defense, Lynn has some nice parts (ward 1 specifically). if you were driving through you were likely on Boston St, the Lynnway, or Western Ave. none of which are to write home about.

lynnfield st, broadway, and off walnut st are pretty nice.

The number of boarded up blighted buildings in the worst areas of Lynn detracts from the appeal.

On the other hand, the equally unattractive Warren and Webster streets and the areas connecting Union Square and Inman Square in Somerville and Cambridge with all the repair and auto parts businesses and junk yards haven't prevented those areas from becoming very desirable.

Yeah it certainly lacks the Rockwell-esque charms of Athol and Holyoke.

Yeah there's a reason why that part of CT shouldn't really still be called New England. It doesn't look too different from Arkansas.

Waterbury, CT

I like how that strip mall is called Colonial Plaza and owned by New England Rental Properties.

I think Lynn gets a bad rep. It's a big city, lots of immigrants. So what.
It's gritty, and unpretty in quite a few places. But it's all about finding the diamonds in the rough. Literally, the Diamond District is awesome. I lived there for a little while and loved the proximity to Salem, Boston, and the OCEAN! Can't beat that.
There's some good eats in Lynn too. If you're into ethnic food, you can get some of the best Dominican and Spanish food. The Capital Diner is great. Plus the more upscale Blue Ox is a gem.
I know many people (husband included) who went through Lynn public schools and have nothing but good things to say about their experience -- mostly that the diversity allowed them to fit in easier, the sports program was awesome, and they had some great teachers to boot.
So yeah, Lynn isn't really all that bad considering the resources that are either right in the city or nearby. Lynn Woods Reservation is great for hiking and getting some amazing views of Boston.
I'd probably buy there without too much hesitation.
