I am currently working in Andover and am planning to relocate the family to MA. My spouse will likely work in Cambridge so we are interested in towns that meet the following criteria

1. Schools. Our kids are currently in elementary school but we want to think ahead and pick towns with good middle and high schools

2. Commute. Ideally one person close to home (kids) and have reasonable commute for the other

3. Affordability. Our budget is (600 - 650k). Ideally a house with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and something that is not terribly dated.

These are our top criteria but I don't want to discount crime, safety, fun for young families etc either.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated!

That is tough spread. I would seriously look at Andover itself, Reading, or Lynnfield. All three are family friendly, very good schools and very safe. Lynnfiled has no public transportation into Boston and not many sidewalks. It is most quiet and most suburban. Andover and Reading have train station and nice downtown areas with shops and restaurants.

I would also look at Winchester which is the priciest of the bunch with understanding that is very expensive town with excellent schools and your budget would be on the lower side. Very nice town if you can swing something.

Anything else closer to Cambridge will be plenty more expensive and no way you will be getting size you would like.
Please, be prepared to compromise on size and condition. It is all about location, location, location. Often, newer homes in desirable towns are very expensive, or you will find them in the areas with schools that are good but not great. Another compromise to consider if amenities, size and age of home is more important to you.

Good luck! Welcome.

Also North Reading and if pinched for cash, then Wilmington. Both have commuter rail service to Boston also close enough to drive/park at Orange Line T stations, Oak Grove, Malden Center, Wellington with Wellington having the most parking.
