Thanks, everyone. I appreciate your responses and will use the search phrase "active." The problem there though is that "active adult community" usually means clubhouse, optional activities, pool and tennis and golf, etc, all of which I neither want nor want to pay for. Just simply a condo that happens to be age restricted.
At the prices cited, I think I'll stick to Western Mass. I'm not looking for a half-mil condo, just a modest condo such as the one in Amherst. I wonder how so many retirees are able to buy at luxury prices, then I remember that anyone in the Boston area selling their home is selling at prices way way above those in other parts of the state.
Then scratch out "active." Active normally does means attached to tennis courts, golf course, clubhouse.
I quite frankly think you are going to have difficulty finding an over 55+ community that is not luxury attached to countryclub like amenities or the kind of facility that offers part of the residents back-up elder care.

There are also nice but not luxury condos such as one attached to a golf course in Westfield. It is not specifically age-restricted, but I would bet most resident are single and over 40. I also remember a few inexpensive age-restricted condos in Easthampton and Westhampton. Some examples follow:

This place might be a compromise. It has a few amenities but nothing like a golf course or anything like that. It is right over the border from MA, minutes to Haverhill and I-495. The price point is far below half a million.
It's not Western MA like you mentioned in your original post, but there are condos on Crescent Way in Sturbridge, MA that are 55+.
There's one currently listed, 7 Crescent Way Sturbridge MA, for $154k. They are also in a pretty walkable area. These seem to come up on the market every so often, so checking out the sold listings might give you a better idea of the development than just the one current listing.
