I'm a recent college graduate who just managed to net a decent paying job in Springfield, and she is just ready for a change of scenery.

Before this, I lived in the North Side of Chicago and really kinda miss the whole feeling of actually having stuff to do around me (and after visiting springfield, I can already say that living in that city is definitely a no.) Are there any places around that area that would be good for a couple in their early 20s? It doesn't need to be a big city but it would be nice to have a safe area with most necessities within a 5 to 10 minute drive, and to not feel too out of place on the block. I've been told to check out both Northampton and Easthampton, so I figured I might as well ask about them.

We aren't looking to buy anything yet, and our budget just for rent would be about $1,000 a month, so anything below that is fair game.

Northampton is about it. Maybe Hartford too, it's livelier than Springfield.

True. The Northampton area is wonderful for people your age. Other than that there isn't much.

Not my area, but curious if you can still rent in Northampton/Amherst area for $1000. What does it gets you?

I don't live there anymore. I just go back to visit and I don't know anyone who rents there. I'd guess $1000 might still get you something but I'm not the best person to ask.

A recent local article said that rents in Northampton are averaging at $1350. You may need housemates.

That may be hard to manage as a couple. Even if they were willing to have housemates, many don't want or "accept" couples, for a variety of reasons. It can be uncomfortable- seems to be the main reason.

These articles are almost never to be trusted. Seriously. They've always been way over reality everyplace I've lived. I think these articles take their average from listings, not from what people are really paying. Heck, some of the averages I've seen for Somerville and Cambridge will make you think a $2000 one bedroom is the average.

Well, I do pay almost exactly that for a small house in Northampton. But it's mortgage, not rent. So who knows?

Northampton certainly is nice...BUT the prices are going up.
How do Northampton rental prices compare to surrounding communities? | masslive.com

You do have to consider the amenities when renting. Many places are old mills that can tend to have other things factored in like a lounge with wifi, a gym (kinda common), parking if it is gated/locked and security.

Personally I could probably pay less for rent...however having a property management company provides me with a bit more peace of mind then a owner of a house.

They've been working on nightlife for awhile in Springfield and it's one of those iffy things. Apparently larger stars did show up but some dolts ruined shows by throwing things at people. Remember skid row? Someone threw a glass bottle at him in the early 90's..I think Nelly or 50 cent performed and someone threw a water bottle. Having said this though I've heard this place is good and the pool hall next to it Theodores | Blues Booze & BBQ

Will the casino bring some things in? Maybe but it's just hard to say. I'm no casino expert but it's nowhere the size of foxwoods or mohecan sun but at the same point they couldn't make it that size to begin with and it would get less approval. There's been talk of trying to move i91 underground to open up the waterfront but I doubt that would happen until funds actually come in.
