Nah you're thinking of the outer Worcester County milltowns. Worcester itself is just fine if you're not an unbearable urban elitist. Another interesting Worcester music venue is The Firehouse for underground music with a DIY ethic.

For Hopkinton- Good suggestions already. I'd add Natick or Hudson to the list. Both traditionally middle-class towns with strong downtown bones and revitalizing nicely into lively places. Closer to Boston will be tough unless you're being very handsomely paid!

The Firehouse is great. Glad it has gone legit. I was going there years ago when it was on the down low.

Worcester is much more affordable, and commuting from Boston to Hopkington every day is going to get pretty annoying.

And if you're going to suggest Boston alternatives to Worcester, mention something better than Allston or Brighton..

I think we need to remember his age though. For people in their early 20s, Allston is pretty awesome. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be out in Waltham, etc at that age. Even the Waltham of today, which is far far superior to the one of 20 years ago.
