If private school is out of the question, I wonder about your probe into Backbay or Beacon Hill. The only better public school in Boston are examination schools. There are 3 of them.

==========================
The Examination Schools
617-635-9514
We have three "examination schools" for grades 7-12 that admit students on a competitive basis. They are: Boston Latin Academy in Dorchester, Boston Latin School in the Longwood hospital area, and the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics & Science in the Madison Park complex, Roxbury. All three schools accept new students for grades 7 and 9. O'Bryant School also accepts new students for grade 10.
Students are admitted to the exam schools based on results of an entrance test and grade point average. Each accounts for 50% of a student's score. The grade point average is based on final marks in English and math from the previous school year (grade 5 or 7) and the first two marking periods of the current year.

Test registration materials for students applying for the next school year will be available in early September in all our middle schools, Family Resource Centers, branch libraries, and Boys & Girls Clubs.
=====================================

Many nice private High School. BC High, BU Academy, BBN, Belmont Hill, Brimmer and May School.

Some of these private HS is harder to get in than Harvard due to the limited seats available versus number of applicant.

Wherever you end up, check out how many dogs you are permitted to have before you are required to apply for a kennel license. I know in my town it is only 3, and we are more rural than the places you've mentioned.
I took your advice and looked into Medfield and was amazed at how affordable it is. But what about things to do in the town? Doesn't look like they have a rec center or much in the way of shopping...does it? Please give me more details on the town itself if possible? Thanks.

Looks like someone still like that little white suburban town.

I don't live there myself but it is basically upper middle class with both newer developments and also some very nice older homes. It has a great school system which I believe a couple of years ago scored the highest MCAS scores in the state. Medfield has its own high school and middle school unlike some of the surrounding towns that are regionalized systems.

The downtown area is clean, has several small restaurants. There is one small department type store. Down the road is a shopping plaza with a large grocery store and a clothing store.

Curt Schilling, the Red Sox pitcher lives there (he bought it from Drew Bledsoe when he left the Patriots). If I recall I think they paid about 7 million for it.

You are right, no train, I was thinking of Norfolk. Medfield is a nice town, though. Won't you miss it if you move?

It's understandable confusion. There are train tracks in Medfield--there's even an old train station (now a restaurant). And there are trains in Medfield but they only run at night and they're freight trains. But depending on which side of town someone were to move to, there are 3 suburban train lines within close (bikeable even!) distance: Walpole, Norfolk and Needham.

Someone mentioned Westwood. I think it's spendy, though it's got a great school system, and it's spread out. I never got the feel of real community there.

Isn't Mendon out around there too? My neighbor's brother lives in one of those towns and he doesn't even remember which one!
