But it's not cold like that everyday. January temps in MA average a high of 36 and a low of 22. Add in wind and yes it can be cold. But it's not frigid Barrow, AK cold. Be smart, dress properly, and one will be fine.

Also, unless you're one of those sheltering parents or on a rural road where buses make individual stops, your kid will likely be walking to and waiting at the bus stop . I recall many mornings jogging in place to stay warm.

Many towns have hidden fees for services not covered by property taxes. My town, North Attleborough, has a few. School activity participation, bus transportation, and trash removal come to mind. Thankfully the tax rate is rather low to offset these.

North Attleborough Yearly Bus Pass
$300/child $600/family cap

North Attleborough School Activity Fees
Athletics/Club/Music/Theater
$150 per sport for Fall, Winter and Spring
$150 for Clubs – one time charge for all offerings
$50 for Music – one time charge for all offerings
$50 for Theater – one time charge for all offerings
$600 Family Cap

Trash pick up is another item in my town. You have to pay a yearly fee for p/u and transfer/recycle station sticker, and buy bags for every p/u.

North Attleborough Trash Removal (average approx $300/yr)
2014-2015 Trash P/U annual fee 225.00 (+1 sticker for transfer visits)
2014-15 Bag fee $1.50/large 30g bag $1.00/small 15g bag - All trash must be in bags for each weekly p/u
