I hate propane heat ... noxious and the smell penetrates cloths, walls, stuff in general. If you can easily run stove pipe, I'd be tempted to run a pellet stove. Lot's of BTUs, cheap fuel, and it won't stink up the joint.

A wood stove

Sure, it eats up a bit of floor space, but it can work quite well for seldom uses.

My mom used to have a 40 x 60 x 12 pole barn in central Michigan. We put in a tiny $150-ish cast iron stove in there. Once you get it fired up, it'd would get the whole huge space above 45F, when it's close to zero outside. Her barn was just corrugated sheet metal, no-insulation, no floor, no skirt board, so quite possibly the worst thing to condition
