Greetings. We have a possible relocation from the Midwest to Chelmsford. The children are grown so schools are not an issue any longer We have two dogs, so a yard is key. Any advise about Chelmsford or nearby towns would be greatly appreciated. I would love an older home closer to a town center where I could walk to do some shopping.

Welcome. Groton has great downtown with shops, plus very rural feel outside if its town center. You can certainly find big yard including trails to walk your dogs. Groton would be my first pick. Quintessential and beautiful New England town with good amenities and beautiful setting.
Good luck.

Since schools are not an issue I would also look at Pepperell. That said Groton is truly a wonderful town, if my budget allowed I would most definitely move there.

Am I correct in that home prices seem to be lower in Groton?

Lower then? I live a town over and Groton is definitely more expensive. I am guessing it is more expensive then Chelmsford and probably on par for Westford.

Given the beauty of the town, the home prices are low for Mass.

Ahhh....I see what you mean 495. But it is expensive for the 119 area. It does shine over these other towns though.

I am doing quick searches online for real estate and the prices seem higher in Chelmsford , but it could be that I have no clue what I am actually looking at. It could be that there are simply more homes available at a lower price at this time...
