Hey everyone,
New to the forum. Have given up after becoming exasperated trying to find answers online!

I am moving back to the US after many years abroad with an MA license which expired about a year ago. My wife and I are moving to Austin and want to do a road-trip through the states - fun

So, the plan so far is, fly to Boston, renew driver's license, buy a car, drive to Austin. A bit convoluted I know...

My questions are:
- Proof of residence: Is it possible to renew an MA driver's license without proof of residence? Is it possible with just a friend's address or anything? If necessary, is proof of residence easy to prove?
- Time: How long does it take to renew a license? Obviously there's the day at the RMV, but after that how long does it take before you get the license?

Any help is super appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Couldn't you just use your international license (assuming you have one) rather than getting an MA license and then a TX license?

That's one of the things I'm thinking but I'm worried that it will be difficult to buy a car on an international license and that the insurance costs will be crazy doing it that way...

I'd compare taxes and other costs between here and Texas before purchasing a car. Road trips are fun, but it may not be the best plan to buy a car here, pay excise tax, have it registered in Mass, and then take it out of state, where you'll have to re-register it and pay who knows what other fees.

Regarding the license, do you actually need a license to buy a car? Drive one, sure. But to buy one? Again, I'd wait until you got to your final destination so you have a license issued by the state in which you live. Otherwise, with the car and the license, you're duplicating efforts (and expenses).

Google "Massachusetts renew expired drivers license" and follow the first answer. It's all right there:

Renewing your MA Driver License - Ma-Portal.org

The only issue is probably be your license.

If you're moving to Austin, I don't understand why you'd want a Mass license. You'd then have to get a Texas license when you get there, so why add extra?
