My husband and I have several young children and would like a larger house (5+ bedrooms) with a bit of land (0.5 acres or more) somewhere within an 1.5 drive of Watertown, with a budget of about $500-700k. We have family in CT, so we would prefer west rather than north or east. He will be working remotely so we have a bit of flexibility in terms of location.

DH grew up in the country and favors green space, but I don't want to be too rural. I would love to live in a historic downtown area with a cute town square where I could walk to the library, general store, etc. We need a strong Catholic elementary school within 15 minutes driving.

Any ideas for places to start my search?

Walpole. Gets you the Catholic school, too.

If you are looking within 1.5 hours of Watertown then Longmeadow or East Longmeadow fit that description. Or even Amherst /Northampton area. All are well within the 1.5 hours radius. And the Catholic school requirements too.

Those places are not "well" within a 1.5 hour radius. Google puts the Longmeadows at around 1 hour and 40 minutes, Amherst and Northampton both close to 1 hour and 50 minutes. With traffic, it will be much longer.

Norfolk does not have a downtown. In that area I would suggest Walpole or Franklin. Going further west, Shrewsbury would be a good option as well. Some smaller towns (might be too rural for you) would be Groton, Harvard and West Brookfield. Harvard has a Catholic school, not sure about the other two.

Sure it does. The town common, town hall, library, Walgreen's, Dunkin Donuts, a few banks, the commuter rail, are all very walkable; just as the OP desired.

I drive from West Springfield to Exit 17 on the pike twice a week during normal commute hours. It takes me 75 minutes door to door. Very rarely do I hit crazy traffic in the morning. I'd say more so heading home if I leave Watertown closer to 4:30-5. But that is mostly on Friday afternoons.

If the OP is planning on commuting to Watertown then living on western mass would be crazy. It's a long drive. Personally id hate to do a 1.5 to 2 hour commute each way.
