We would like to get our kids out of their East Coast pressure-cooker high school and into a school that is still high-quality, but where the culture is not so cutthroat and obsessive about college admissions. We also need a "reasonable" commute to Boston (say hour-ish and not overly complicated). Does Natick fit the bill?

Natick Center to South Station is about 30 minutes via train. Riverside to Government Center is about 45 minutes via Green.

I grew up in Natick - Natick is chill, and although it was good before, it's continuing to get even better.

It's not a snobby or pretentious town. It's not as diverse socioeconomically as it used to be either, I don't think, but it still has some diversity in that regard.

I've never lived in Natick, but I have many friends who do. They're all pretty laid back folks and despite wanting a great education for their kids they're not Ivy obsessed. In general, I think Natick is a great place to live. The town center is nice and there's a lot of summertime activities on the town green every year. One of my friends lives in a neighborhood just off of RT 135 and he loves to walk down and watch the Boston Marathon every year. The area with the mall and all the shopping is just one small corner of the town. The rest of the town has so much to offer.

To us, it seems like the 'pressure cooker' environment is there if you want it, but is not the 'standard'. Some do get into Ivy League schools and I'm sure they worked for it. However, there are tons of courses and extracurricular activities to suit an array of interests. It might be more of what you're looking for.

Commuting isn't bad - 30-45 minutes to South Station, with stops at Back Bay, Yawkey, and the new Boston Landing. I've never made the drive so I can't comment, but you do have easy Pike access.

I live in East Natick (Near 9+Oak). Very easy to commuter rail (30mins into South Station). Walking distance to Marathon route. About 10mins drive to the mall and other great shopping. 2 min drive into Wellesley, 5 mins to downtown Natick. It's a pretty excellent place to live.

Has Natick built a new commuter lot since the Middlesex garage collapsed? It's been a while since I commuted from Natick center, but I usually rode my bike down there in the summer and took the bus or got a ride from my wife in the winter. With only limited on-street permit parking, the station wasn't very convenient unless you live within walking distance.
