We are on town water and my wife is getting upset with how hard it is. We've also had a couple of plumbers out who have commented on how the hard water is known in our town to be bad for pipes. Has anyone else put in a softener they would recommend? Or warn against?

Thanks!

I have installed the Culligan shower heads with replaceable filters. They work well. My water used to leave a orange tinge in my tile grouting. This reduces it a bunch. Also, my skin is less dry in winter months. My refrigerator has a internal filter for drinking water. Boston has good water but it is on the hard side.

Been doing this 40+ years, but NOT in your area, so you aren't getting a sales pitch here....

Fleck 5600 Econominder has been my valve of choice. Couple that with 10% crosslinked resin, and you have the strongest unit you can buy IMO, with excellent parts availability and reliability. I have units in the field that are 40+ years old - and I can rebuild/repair them with the same parts that I use on the units today.
