Thinking about a move to Quincy, MA. Is downtown or any center a walkable community enough to suffice for someone who does not drive? For example, would it be possible to rent an apartment in an area of Quincy and reasonably be able to get to essentials (supermarket, doctors/ER, gym, dog park, train, restaurants/bars, etc)?

North Quincy would pretty much fit the bill. You could easily live in the area around North Quincy High School and be able to walk to transit (North Quincy red line stop), a super market (Stop and Shop), numerous bars and restaurants, liquor stores, convenience stores (there's a Walgreens right across the street from North Quincy HS). Not sure about a gym off the top of my head. It's also very close to Wollaston Beach which is great for walking and running. Lots of people take their dogs for walks over there.

Very much so in parts of the city. Other parts require a bus transfer to the subway station

North Quincy has a Big Y supermarket chain, Asian supermarket, Anytime Fitness, the 24/7 gym chain

Also a Panera and Applebees across the street from the T. Marshall's, Ocean State Job Lot, Wendy's and Chipotle are on the other side of the tracks...

Plenty of pizza shops and Asian eateries in the North Quincy and Wollaston area. Quincy Center has some eating options also.

Plus, Planet Fitness is a short walk to Quincy Center station, as is the main library and modern YMCA.

Wollaston and N. Quincy have very small branch libraries with limited hours, but still good to have them.

Quincy is huge. A lot of areas are very walk able. Some have a more suburban feel. Quincy Center and N. Quincy are very walkable.

Yes, many bus routes, and Quincy Center has a commuter rail stop...plus a seasonal boat in Marina Bay.

I feel relatively safe since living here in 2004. More and more young professionals have moved in also, making it feel less downtrodden (as parts were and some still are.)
