My wife and I are considering a move to Concord. We have a five-year-old daughter and we're wondering about the pros and cons of the town. It's obviously got an attractive downtown, but is it friendly or snobby, too Yankee for words or fairly welcoming? We currently live outside of New York City, in the suburbs, and we're used to diversity and good public transportation.
It's a great town, if you can afford it. I think it's fairly liberal (plenty of people who used to live in Cambridge) and an old Yankee attitude of no-flash, no glitz. Plenty of people left there (older people) from before housing went nuts high. I'd happily live there (live two towns west).
I can't think of a town I like better, to be honest. It's a fine place for anyone, including a family life.
Make sure to ask the sellers and real estate agents about the superfund site Starmet. We thought we were lucky to find some "affordable" houses (around $700000) in Concord but quickly changed our mind when we learned about the depleted uranium issues. It also seemed like as if the town was trying very hard not to make this information too public....can't say I blame them.
Let me just add that there is no perfect place. We have had our share of teenage drama since living here which is only five months including one death of a teen this last weekend due to speeding. There are drugs in the safest of suburbs and all the calamities you face in the city with less crime and pretty surroundings.
We looked at a place in West Concord and absolutely LOVED the area. Much prefer it to Concord Center. Anyone know how long the commute is by commuter rail to Porter Square in the morning? Enough seating or do you have to stand usually?
