First off, Massachusetts is pretty family oriented as to kicking people with kids, especially special needs kids, out of their homes plus disrupting the school year when the kids are so close is crazy. Go back to court and see if you can get an extension until after the school year. Perhaps until July 1. Next where is the job location. Metro Boston is expensive but if you head to NH or RI or out towards Worcester you might find something in your price range (what is your price range?). If you get this extension start looking now don't wait. There must be something out there but you must get rid of any desires and concentrate on necessities. Yes, it is nice to live close to the Ocean but that costs money. Yes it is nice to have 2 bathrooms but if you can get buy on 1 1/2 so be it. Consider this transition temporary. When you get back on your feet more you will have more room to be picky. Now is not the time to be picky.

FWIW I grew up in the Boston area, 8 people (6 kids) in a 1 bath just over 1,000 sq ft house. We managed and thought nothing of it.

The math was more favorable back then. You never hear of people doing this today for a reason.

It's been around for 50 years...

People have fewer kids now because kids are expensive.

The bigger problem is renting after foreclosure. Certainly pets are an issue in many rentals but with their credit history they will have a huge problem finding somewhere to rent. If they have several months rental that they can put down as collateral maybe, but I doubt that they even have that. They need family help. Someone who is willing to take responsibility if they don't pay their rent. It will be 3 years of good credit before they even can consider buying.

Correct. Everyone keeps obsessing over the pets but the pets aren't really the biggest issue.

If the math was more favorable we should have been able to live in a bigger house. The point is, the OP can't be choosy, she takes what she can get and afford and makes due. Certainly she doesn't wish to live in a dangerous neighborhood or a house that is falling down around her, but a smaller home with less amenities can be done.
