For what it's worth, the case rates are still increasing, so the first derivative is positive, but I think the smoothed national trend indicates (for now) that the second derivative is negative - that the rate of increase is decreasing. I hope that is the case and that these are the early signs of cresting of this wave nationally anyways.

Most are predicting that in the Northeast, the worst is yet to come.

Yes, I think that makes sense. And even nationally, re the statements I just made, future behavior is of course still hard to predict, but nonetheless, this is the first positive sign in over 6 weeks.

Whatever is going around, calling it delta or whatever will be over with soon. Other countries have shown it lasts for about 6 to 8 weeks and then fades. The bigger issue will be come winter (cold season) when some new variant is pushed, but it won't be delta.

The vaccination rate is too high to do a Florida. That will be limited to the low vaccination rate parts of the state. New Bedford and Springfield as the poster children. It’s looking like booster shots at month 8 are going to happen so as people move indoors when it gets cold, vaccine efficacy against Delta will improve. All the front line health care workers, public safety, and nursing home residents will likely see a booster in October.

So why aren’t Springfield and New Bedford doing local mask orders? They’re both above 20 per day per 100,000. Failed cities don’t tend to have enlightened leadership. This should be a public health thing. Not a professional politician thing.

Agreed, you still need sound leadership at the local level to benefit for local decision-making, and this is not always assured.

I guess I've concluded that I don't care. I've had my two jabs and will likely get my 3rd this fall. I have lots of N95 masks for PPE. It doesn't change my life that somebody unvaccinated in New Bedford without a mask is shopping in the same store. I'm not going to get sick. I made the choice to not get sick. The same is true in public schools for anyone age 12+.

I don't see anyone wearing an N95 these days. In the grocery store it's a mix of unmasked and cloth masks.

It's uncomfortable as hell. And overkill if you ask me...literally trying to guard against the odd chance of me, as a vaccinated person, picking up enough of a viral load through fleeting exposure?

I do own some KN95 masks, which I've worn on airplanes. But these days for when I go into retail? It's the blue surgical masks.
