I'm really glad that Brandeis, which is right next door, has finished in-person classes until February.

Waltham is generally pretty safe, but that end of town has an above average amount of weirdness. When I was at college in Brandeis, we had a guy (not a student) who followed friendly students who held the door open for him into their dorms late at night and then went looking for room doors that were unlocked. When he found one, he'd go in and beat the inhabitant before leaving. At the time, campus was really safe so many people left their doors unlocked all the time, so you can imagine. There was also the "masturbating man" (as thus referred in dozens of emails) who would expose himself behind the athletics fields for years but was never caught. Most recently, a teenager broke into a rental home of a few grad students directly beside the school and stabbed two of them. It was a completely random attack - they had no connection with the assailant.

This is especially worrisome because it doesn't seem like robbery is a motivation for this attacker.

“These attacks, which appeared to be random, caused the community of Waltham to be in fear for several months,”

These were all random/unprovoked attacks, not a hate crime. Unless of course you think crimes against men somehow fits into that category.
