To those of you folks getting a hard on over the idea of topless women on the beach, I hope you do realize that the ones who voluntarily do so are likely not the ones you are going to want to see in that state...

Hate to break it to you, but it's not about you and what you want to see. Hope that helps!

I think it should be mandatory.
Just a waste of the earths natural resources to make a top for no real purpose.
Save the earth.

Same with anything you can install on a Windows PC, smartphone, or tablet.
Maybe take responsibility and charge as the parent and raise a child that respects you.

American culture is incredibly prudish. I say that as someone who would never partake in a topless beach (and not just because I've turned into the 30-something wearing a long sleeve robe and a broad hat to cancel out all the sunbathing benefits of being at the beach!).

When I studied abroad in Iceland, I went with my homestay family to the local thermal pool. To go into the pools, everyone has to bathe first. Big touristy pools, like the Blue Lagoon, are set up with Americans and others in mind and have stalls for showering. Not the case in the local spots! You were expected to strip down completely nude and attendants watched to make sure you actually washed your bits. While it was separated by gender, little boys up to about 10 came in as well (including my homestay brother). And there was nowhere to hide! There I was, butt naked, with my Icelandic mom, brother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and a few aunts with the adults ranging from about 25 to 85 and a whole range of body types. And they all thought it was hilarious that I was embarrassed! While you wore a swimsuit in the pool itself, it's not like you could hide either seeing or being seen beforehand.

Last I checked, my homestay siblings aren't sexual deviants.

Now, because that obviously isn't the culture here, it's a bit different. If anything, that means that if it passes, a handful of people will choose to be topless (most likely older ladies) and people will either adapt or avoid those beaches. Oh well. It's not the end of the world.

If I could survive seeing my dad's and all of my male neighbors' chests (larger than some women!) every day the temperature tipped above 80 growing up in Georgia while they did yard work, BBQed, or just visited, then your kids can survive seeing what is most likely going to be an older woman baring her chest for a few minutes walking past at a topless beach. If anything, it's a great opportunity to teach kids not to stare!

Who’s “getting hard” over it? The general sentiment is just that it seems silly that it’s illegal - nobody’s getting excited over the prospect of seeing boobs at the beach. The only people commenting on appearance at all are the people who are seemingly against it. Frankly, I’m amazed that people are so concerned and bothered by what other people at the beach look like.

That didn’t answer the question. In this day and age when web browsers are literally in everyone’s pockets how, specifically, can you as a parent prevent your kid from ever viewing porn? Vague commentary about “taking charge” and “raising a kid that respects you” doesn’t say anything in particular and completely ignores adolescent curiosity. Even good, respectful kids would be easily tempted by instant access to porn.

And...I'll say this curiosity has always been there in adolescents, and way predates the Internet. As a kid growing up in a conservative area, I still managed to sneak readings of racy novels authored by Jacqueline Susann, at my local library! Oh, the horror!

Remember when you were a kid and you used to "sneak" things? You did it in spite of what your parents told you, yet you grew up knowing certain things are taboo and that there is a "line" at times. You will probably set similar boundaries for your own kids, and some things are kept as taboo for a reason. The people who grow up in a free-for-all where adults in their lives set no boundaries or example, let's just say that usually ends poorly for them.

As for the topless at beach thing specifically, once again I am talking specifically in context of American culture and expectations.

Nobody’s advocating for a free for all, but I sincerely doubt “boundaries” set by parents are enough to prevent a curious adolescent from looking at porn. It’s not just the “taboo” factor. If it was, porn wouldn’t be a multi billion dollar industry supported by adults who can access it without fear of crossing any boundaries set by parents. Teens and adolescents are raging with hormones and curiosity is bound to get the better of most of them when they have immediate access to pretty much anything they can imagine any time they want. Plenty of very good parents have kids who have looked at porn. I think its important to set boundaries, but it’s naive to think boundaries (or any amount of good parenting) are enough to overcome the combination of adolescent curiosity and instant access.
