lol, i'm not sure it's possible to get sunburnt on certain body parts...but it certainly is on the breasts. Just doesnt seem worth the exposure to me as someone who has had skin cancer.

I think some people who oppose this think that as soon as the law passes bathing suit tops will be tossed in the air like graduation caps. But I'd wager that most people feel similar to you (I know my fiancee does). Even in places like the French Riviera where it's already accepted/already legal, most women are generally wearing tops most of the time.

Indeed!

The one who is advocating for the vote, Dorothy Stover, is quite interesting in her own right:

I'd rather have topless beaches than maskless stores.

There's something legally very weird about this.

It's not clear that women being topless on a beach would be illegal in Massachusetts, and if it's already legal, then there's no need for Nantucket to pass any law at all. But if it is illegal, I don't see how Nantucket could exempt itself. I mean, suppose you go to Crazyville, and while you're there, someone drives off in your car. You go to the police station to report it, and they tell you "I'm sorry sir/madam, here in Crazyville we've repealed the law against theft." I think we'd say it's not in a town's power to do that! So if someone raised a fuss about bare breasts on a Nantucket beach, and claimed to be alarmed and shocked, I don't see how the town police could say that Town Meeting has decreed that the law didn't apply there, if it's a law that applies everywhere else in the state. If this item comes up at the town meeting, I wonder if anything like this will be mentioned.

It operability would still be subject to approval by state-level legislation.

It's called open and gross lewdness MGL c272 §16.
