Nantucket To Decide If Women Can Go Topless At Beaches Next Year (renting, homes)

Won't work. The bikini top is the last line of defense between our children's eyes and seeing the skin of people who are older and/or not the same level of fit as models. If women are allowed to go topless, we may begin to see people at the beach who are older and out of shape wearing less than normal. Parkas for everyone over age 30 and/or a BMI over 25!

I remember being 13 and going to St Maarten and thinking it was super exciting that people will be topless on the beach. Even during peak adolescence, the mystique and intrigue went away within hours. I can't confirm that it didn't cause the deterioration in my vision or the years of therapy, however. I’m kind of surprised by this as many of the people who frequent Nantucket are the more conservative waspy types. Anyone I know who goes there frequently I can’t imagine taking their top off at the beach.

I have a memory of being a lifeguard at an apt complex. An older woman took her top off to sunbathe on the deck. It was a bit bold as there were others out there and it was 1996 I believe. Another woman not native to the US stormed in to speak to 16 year old me about the topless woman. She was angry and her exact words were, I don’t want to stare at her naked breasts. I said I’m not sure it’s my place to anything. She goes yes it is. It was so awkward that I went over to the poor old woman and said I’m sorry there’s been some complaints that you’re topless. She just said oh ok I thought it was all girls and put the top back.

So clearly some people are probably still not ok with topless women on the beach. I don’t reallly care. I wouldn’t do it as I’ve had skin cancer and don’t see the need to expose my self to anymore of that.

Sounds as if the move would just mean that it's no longer illegal for a woman to be topless on beaches in Nantucket - so theoretically, all of them. Technically, it's illegal in MA. So even if it gets voted through at the town meeting, it would need to be approve by the AG's Office. Like you, I don't think this will pass easily in a place like Nantucket.

I had to ask several women to put tops back on during my lifeguarding years. It was really awkward. Generally, the guards ignored it unless someone else complained which was about 50% of the time. The worst was being told by my boss to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave the pool area (we didn't allow parents to stay for swim lessons - they distracted the kids). As an 18yo guy, it was incredibly uncomfortable and I think I handled it terribly (she could have chewed me out, but she didn't).

I think a lot of people are in the same boat as you. Even in places where it's allowed/not unusual, it's not as if every (or even most) woman is topless.

I don’t care about the nudity. I care about the lack of body awareness we see on beaches already, and nudity would only make it worse. You can’t unsee that stuff.

Thousands American kids vacation in Dominican Rep every year. We did twice with our 8 and later 10 yo. I haven’t seen kids paying much attention to topless women on the beach.

I worry much more about all gender and sexual orientation weirdness they learn at school lately.

I don’t think it would be damaging for kids. It shouldn’t really bother anyone. But I can kind of see if you’re on a family vacation it could be weird to see a bunch of women prancing around topless. We have sexualized breasts to the point where it can be uncomfortable to see them. People still complain about women breastfeeding in public.

Haven't heard of this happening elsewhere in Mass, but I know it's a thing in Europe as well as in other parts of the country, including neighboring New Hampshire

I spent some time in France years ago, where I stayed with an American friend who had French family. One day they decided to go to the beach and my friend started chuckling that I was in for a surprise; women would be topless.

At first I thought this would be interesting, weird, but interesting. Well, it was. Where I was sitting on the beach there was a mother breast feeding her baby to my left and an elderly woman to my right. There were people of all ages, of course. Some were attractive, others not so much.

After about twenty minutes of being wide-eyed it stopped being weird. It was a non-issue.
