I did find this..

"Is it spelled Foxboro or Foxborough?
Foxborough, Massachusetts. "Foxborough" is the official spelling of the town name, although the alternative spelling " Foxboro " is also frequently used. This alternative spelling is used by the United States Postal Service as the correct form by which to address mail to recipients in the town although both can be processed by their system.

If there was a letter before the "o" it would show at least in part. It doesn't seem likely.

I was kind of ready to accept, albeit, a little unwillingly, that it must be Fox or Box boro.
But, you've encouraged me not to.
I agree with you as to both lines. There is room enough for some part of a letter.
The overall condition also makes it seem unlikely that it's just worn away.

Yeah, but that object is really old. Some long abandoned mill village from the horse and wagon era might not show up on Google.

At one point in the 1970's, leaving Acton on Rt 111 the sign said "Entering Boxborough." Coming down 111 from Harvard it said "Entering Boxboro."

I've decided that this is a fault by whoever made the die with which to stamp the item and the value of the item wasn't enough to bother redoing.
Sound reasonable?
Now to figure out what the thing is, which also may not be worth the time...first thought is an antique skate key but that's not a problem for this forum but knowing the town may have helped with that.
Thanks to all who tried to help.

Can you post a pic of the item?

I collect a lot of locally-made antique trinkets for display so i've spent a lot of time researching what various items are and their history. Maybe i've seen it?
