It's completely ridiculous that you're supposed to get the car inspected every year because it's way too short of a timeframe. But now they are changing the rules so that you can't let it drift a couple months and extend out the period.

It's clearly a cash grab by the inspection places. I wonder how much in bribes they had to pay to get this.

Well there's goes my carefully crafted plan of going on the first of the following month with the hopes if I kept a car for 13 years, I'd get an extra year.

Oh well, I've seen so many cars with 2021 stickers. Going a year is a bit of a stretch.

The car I bought in January 2015 already has a 3 or 4 on it - I don't drive it much in the winter - so I got a quarter of the way there

I think Ma should follow California's rule when it comes to vehicle inspection.
It is done every other year when your registration is due for renewal.
We have to renew every year, but only has to pass an emissions test every other year.
The state inspects nothing but the emissions system, no brakes, wipers, exhaust, tires etc, just emissions.
No stickers or anything like that.
The emissions report is sent to the dmv electronically, and it is a requirement before you can renew your registration.

It is ridiculous that they focus on this. I don't think they should be worrying about penalizing the handfuls of people who wait until it is a little bit into the following month after they are due for a new sticker. At least they are actually doing the right thing by going to the stations to get one. There are so many who don't and won't but yet they continue driving around without fully functioning brake lights or with half their bumper hanging off ,dragging on the ground as they drive or pick ups with unsecured loads. Efforts to collect cash and improve safety would be better spent enforcing patrols that impose hefty fines for these violators. Those are more of a safety issue on the roads from what I can see and most likely many that they pull over might not have an up to date inspection sticker either so give them a double whammy fine at that point.

So if you have a November sticker but wait until December 1, they'll give you a January 2022 sticker and you'll be due again in January 2023?

One time I worked overseas unexpectedly and came back to a 4 month expired sticker in September. That would have been BS if I had to get one in Sept then another one 4 months later.

BTD already writes tickets for expired inspection or tags just as fast as they will for expired meters or illegal parking. I've had to appeal a ticket that I got at 7:00 on the first of the month after my tag expired, and I had a friend get similar when they parked at a meter to visit for dinner.

My wife got ticketed twice in the same day for expired inspection sticker and registration while parked at a meter. We were able to appeal one of the four, for some reason they made us pay double for one of them.

No. If you have a sticker that expired in 2021 and then go any month after November 1 to December 31, you get a sticker that expires in January 2023. Any sticker that expired in 2022 will reset to January 2024 if it is re-inspected more than 12 months after it is due. Basically it's penalizing you for going over a year so you reset to January from now on.

I see so many cars without expired inspection stickers everyday. It should be simple for the RMV to know when your sticker expires because that data is stored by the state. A letter after 30 days beyond expiration as a courtesy with a threat of cancelling registration at 60 days.
