I'd call Tufts and Brandeis liberal arts colleges -- no?

Did UMass Amherst get more competitive over the years? It was everyone's backup school when I was in high school.

What's the difference between liberal arts and university? I know someone who is majoring in chemistry at Amherst College. Chemistry is not liberal arts.

UMass system was trying to compete with U of California system in the early 20teens. There was tremendous backlash over how many out of state students were being accepted leaving solid MA students looking for an affordable education out in the cold. It’s definitely shed the ZooMass rep.

Tufts? No. Among other options, Tufts has expansive medical, dental, and health sciences programs.

Amherst is a liberal arts college. Science is included in the liberal arts. A university is generally a school with multiple advanced graduate and research programs.

The UMass system began seeing significant positive changes on a number of fronts in the early 2000's under William Bulger who brought in serious money and ushered in higher performing students.

Was the campaign considered successful? Six UC's crack the top 50.

It's been in the news that Columbia University provided faulty information to US News, which caused its ranking to be higher than it should have been. One of Columbia's own professors blew the whistle on this error (or deliberate deception) and Columbia withdrew the data. But now I'm wondering, have any other colleges been cheating in the same way? Not that any around here ever would, of course.

UMass has worked hard to shed it's ZooMass, backup school over the past 10-15 years. Like many schools, the more prestige it has, the more students apply, allowing it to lower it's acceptance rate which increases the allure of the school and in turn attracts more high ranking, full pay students which starts the cycle all over again.

Northeastern did that starting in the early 90's by focusing heavily on the USNWR ranking. It is no longer the blue collar, commuter school for the Boston area commuter student. It is now a top 50 national university that was once in the top 150 that is now able to charge over $60K a year for tuition.

The liberal arts are literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and physical sciences. It stems from the word Liberalis - Latin for "appropriate for free men." A liberal arts education was for those that could participate in a civic life. Vocational training was for slaves and the others who did menial work and were not considered part of society.

Tufts considers itself a liberal arts university although is offers engineering and computer science degrees. CS is now Tufts' largest degree program. They require all students to take a number of liberal arts classes to graduate. My son earned his BA degree in Biology from the School of Arts & Sciences.
