The crash occurred on South Street as students were returning home from a hockey game.

It’s crazy how damaged the bus looks. Details are pretty scarce, but I’m wondering how fast the bus was going when it crashed and more importantly what led to the crash. I drive on South Street all the time, probably more days than I don’t since my work is just off of it. It’s not too far from the highway, but far enough that by the time you get to that point of South Street, you shouldn’t be driving highway speed.

Sad. Seems like it hasn't been a good week for buses:

With all that weight it doesn't take high-speed to do serious damage. That said, I've noticed that a lot of buses tend to travel at higher than the speed limits around here and they get away it. Probably because nobody wants to get in the way of a bus and few police officers are inclined to stop a bus.

How tragic and infuriating. To think that the students had almost returned to their destination when this happened.

This is heinous. Some of the reports are mistaken: this was a normal weekend shuttle, not a special trip back from a hockey game (though certainly a handful of students were returning). The reason that matters is because it could have been anyone - the shuttles run regularly from Thursday-Sunday. Normally that shuttle is standing-room only, so it's only that it was cold and that students were close to break/finals that it wasn't more full. Honestly, looking at the damage, I'm shocked that there was only one death, morbid as that sounds. It could have been so much worse if it was at standard capacity for a returning bus where every seat is filled and people are standing shoulder to shoulder in the aisles.

I'm a Brandeis grad and despite graduating more than a decade ago, all of my alumni friends are talking about this. A college hallmate actually passed by the accident because she went to the school's production of Spring Awakening, and pulled over to get the college EMT squad some water because they reported to the scene. It's a small school with a close knit community. We all must have ridden that shuttle 100 times, often going in and out of Cambridge and Boston, and using the Waltham shuttle to get to off-campus jobs and go grocery shopping.

Where the accident happened is really bad for speeding. Folks come off of 90 and speed down a hill, either slamming their breaks when they see the 40 MPH speed limit or just ignoring it altogether. Even though you shouldn't be driving highway speed, folks often do.

Unfortunately it sounds like it was an accident, not anything heinous. Not trying to sound insensitive but there have been lots of accidents and bad events happening everywhere lately.

If it's a routine shuttle, how could the bus driver have not known this (assuming s/he was not the one speeding, which is even worse)? Unless it turns out to have been a medical emergency, and if it was driver error as in 95% of auto accidents, it's very infuriating and tragic.
