[quote=missionhill;64839997]Interesting, yes, but this guy’s whole thing is to run around the country making alarmist, superficial ‘What happened to…’ videos that invite lots of stupid racist comments. The Springfield tour repeats all the old saws about Puerto Rican migration up the Connecticut Valley because of signs supposedly posted somewhere saying go there, collect benefits, never work again… I’ve been hearing those stories around Springfield and Holyoke since the 60s. SMH.[/QUOlTE]

That guy has a youtube channel and one of his videos is of his own hometown in California. The place is 10X worse than Springfield.

Olmsted senior designed the emerald necklace from the Fenway to Franklin Park and Franklin Field. He co-designed the arboretum with Charles Sprague Sargent, the arb's first director. Olmsted's sons, one of whom was Frederick Jr, continued on for decades doing landscape design. Their office is a national historic site you can visit in Brookline.

I think no Olmsteds were involved in Springfield Forest Park. Here's a passage from a thesis on Forest Park available online. "The design (if it can be called that) and construction of the park in the early years was put in the hands of Justin Sackett, a local contractor. Mr. Sackett personally laid out and supervised the construction of many park facilities. He built roads, pavilions, channelised streams, created ponds, grottos, picnic areas, etc. It is apparent that he had no master plan from which he worked. The development of the park was as piecemeal as the acquisition of land. Both public and private funds went to the construction, with private contributions far out-totaling the amount of money appropriated by the city. Money was made available on a yearly basis and Mr. Sackett would go as far with it as he could. Forest Park...is a memorial to Mr. Sackett's creativity and talent."

Which is interesting in showing that you don't necessarily need the "great man's" input to get a good and enduring result.

Yea safe sounds like a stretch. Those places seem kind of old school-y with the fights stabbings and muggings…I know they’ve improved in the last 10 years

Yes, I didn't watch the entire thing, but it seemed like he had some kind of bias/ulterior motives to his descriptions. Not saying Springfield is wonderful, but he didn't seem like a careful, objective observer, that's why I didn't watch the whole thing - in time, I thought, "Okay, enough of that". ;-)

Nick Johnson used to be a regular Republican type but then as his videos got more popular he got more alarmist and dog whistle because it got harder to monetize YouTube so he had to ramp it up a lot. Now he’s way more blatant and ridiculous sounding. He present some facts and does good tours but he also make needless negative predictions about places and snide remarks.

I lived and worked in Springfield and the area for five years. Crime is compounded for those that do crime.

As for jobs there are plenty of jobs. Between medical, legal education, gaming, government etc it adds up. He didn't go into peoples homes so its only natural in January it looks bad. Who goes out to do anything in January?

Anyways the place is hardly struggling. It's no longer in financial receivership and they have GFOA awards for transparency. The school district is not state run and gradually the budget is more locally run.

Home prices are up according to red fin, zillow and the federal reserve. Average is about $230K.So yeah his data is wrong.

Can there be rough areas? Sure but he didn't mention the tornado either. It did a fair amount of damage especially on central Street and the trees in Monson and east Hampton were tossed all over the place.

It lost some population long ago but has increased. Much of Western mass is consolidation to Hampden and Hampshire County. Franklin is flat and the Berkshires has shrank for decades.

He didn't show the park, the museums, the festivals (jazz and roots, pr parade, pancake breakfast, maroon art festival etc) he didn't show mass mutual center, mgm Springfield, Union Station and the growing comedy scene.

"50% more violent than Boston" is NOT "extremely safe".

I wouldn't say extremely safe but again if you don't use it sell drugs the likelihood is much lower. Criminals attack criminals. It's like that in any city
