So I was coming out of Logan the other day, and on the moving walkway they had a recorded announcement from Mayor Wu welcoming people to the city of Boston. Typical blah blah. Until the very end that is, when she...closed it out with "We are a city of Champions...". This immediately got my attention and was like "What the...?".

I mean...nobody around here mistakes Boston for the birthplace of Rocky Marciano no???

So did Michelle Wu just have a long day and forget what city she is in charge of? Or...is she truly trying to STEAL that title from our dear city to the south?

^If that's the case, Brockton's Mayor Sullivan might be wanting a word with Michelle very soon!

Perhaps she was referring to the red sox, and celtics who at one time were championship teams.

I was born in Brockton, and lived my early years in Avon to the north, so I am well aware of Rocky.
One of his nephews/ cousins (not sure which) was in my class at school.

It's one of many nick names attributed to Boston (and a dozen other cities) over the years. Nothing new, but kind of a pompous phrase to use when welcoming visitors in my opinion. "Welcome to Boston; we're better than most of you but enjoy your stay!"

It's honestly not a term I ever recall hearing as affiliated with Boston, in my lifetime anyway.

I've heard it used by many. She didn't make it up. Just a quick search brought up many examples including:

https://www.facebook.com/BostonCityofChampions1/

https://www.boston.gov/news/boston-city-champions

You can even buy mugs and apparel with the phrase. haha

Well then I stand corrected. I still think it's extremely tacky and poor taste to steal a designation like that from another city in the state. There shouldn't be more than one city in the same state sharing the same nickname. Salem is the Witch City. Quincy is the Granite City. New Bedford is the Whaling City. Taunton is the Silver City. Lynn is the (well, you know...). Brockton "was" the City of Champinos....hopefully the rest get left alone.

I had to Google him. He died in 1969. Lots more champions since then!

(I think City of Champions is silly.)

Don't matter. It's THEIRS and you can't take it away from them.

Actually, for many years Brockton was known as the shoe city.
