Hi there,

Thinking about relocating to the Boston area as soon as my girlfriend and I sell our house. I'm from the metrowest suburbs originally and would like to try and live somewhere other than that area. Our price range is around 350k, possibly a bit more. Basically, we would love at least half an acre(have 3 active dogs) that is some what private(not right on top of our neighbors). Low crime is a must, and no more than an hour commute to Boston. The biggest thing is privacy. Where we live now is so noisy and busy. We are not anti social, we are just sick of looking out the windows into our neighbors house! Thanks for any advice!

I know what you mean, we moved to Sherborn and absolutely love having privacy from our neighbors.

How about the Hamilton/Wenham area? Lot sizes are fairly large there. They're small towns but very pretty with train service to Boston.

Thanks! I will check that out. Thats funny because we found an extreme fixer on like 4 acres in Sherborn for around 350K and thought hmmmm. My aunt grew up on a farm in Sherborn and raves about it. Great location and beautiful. Thanks again!

How funny, where was the fixer in Sherborn? We absolutely love it here. It's so quiet and the town has done a lot of preserve open space. There are tons of hiking trails.

There was a really sweet little unfinished carriage house for sale in town overlooking beautiful fields for around $200K but it's off the market temporarily til they work out permits for the bathroom. Such a deal for someone handy but alas, that is not me! :-)

Freetown, Lakeville, Berkley, Norton, Mansfield, Raynham and Bridgewater may fit the bill. Freetown has a large chunk of the town that is State Forest land so abutting that can make sure you have privacy for the long term as no one can build there. Freetown is very safe and 350k can serve you well. It's directly on routes 24 and 140 so the Boston commute is direct. There are both tidal waterways (Assonet Bay/River) and Lakes (Long Pond) which provide good spots for aquatic recreation. Freetown will have a commuter rail station and service by 2016. Lakeville is Freetown's neighbor and offers much of the same. Lakeville has some more lakes (actually shares part of Long Pond with Freetown) and a little more development than Freetown. Lakeville already has commuter rail service.

You could easily find 1/2 acre or more in these communities for what you're looking to spend. It's a nice area and quiet is one of the nicest assets.

I forget the location. 200k sounds pretty tempting as well! That's funny, because we decided to take our house off the market until we sort out some permit issues. Enjoy the beautiful New England Fall for us!

LIttleton? Commuter rail to Boston, purple line.
I have a half-acre in the middle of woods and 4-6 dysfunctional adopted old mutts at a time. I do admit, even with the privacy, everyone on the street could hear my late beagle!
