As a Maine native, I can say it can be true that some Mainers absolutely HATE people from MA (and someone already posted what they are called.) My mother is one of those Mainers. She became that way, according to her, after working with some MA transplants who were very rude and condescending, making fun of Mainers all of the time. I guess it's not at all uncommon for MA folk who move to Maine to proceed to denigrate the state and its people every chance they can get.

Of course, just like certainly not all Mainers are intolerant of those from MA, not all MA people are rude like that. My mother truly believes they all are, though, so imagine her reaction when I married my husband, who is from MA. Serves her right for grounding me that one time.

I am from MA, and every chance I could get I went to Maine, my favorite state... My grandfather was from Maine. I never knew people from Maine didn't like MA people in all the years I went there. Of course I am not rude at all, and from Western MA. Heck, people from eastern MA make fun of us from Western MA, believe me, I know..... They say we are a bunch of hicks from the woods.

My husband is from Western MA and he says he probably hates the Eastern MA people more than my mother does -- and that it is those same people whom she should hate, not all MA people.

I feel like people recoiled a little, thinking that I would be aloof or stand offish when I say I'm from Mass. That was many years ago.
Now, I feel they recoil a little thinking that I'm probably a Liberal.

Usually said when they whip by you at 100+. They're good cover though if i'm feeling a little rambunctious myself.

In that sense, MAers sound like NYers.

NYers have that reputation, too, I guess. I think it happens a lot no matter what state the transplants are from. They move somewhere and immediately make it known what they miss and why the new place should be like their old place. I've lived in MI, MA and NM, and have always kept this in mind -- of course there are things I miss and things I like a lot better where I am from, but I keep that to myself. No one asked me to move to those other places -- its was my choice.

Absolutely. I've seen some of my fellow MA residents earn the Ma**hole title first hand. At the same time, not all Mainers are like that. My girlfriend is a native Mainer. Her parents were warm and welcoming and I have many friends from the 4+ years I lived there.

My point was that I've seen some stereotypes in other states, but Maine was the only one where I saw a completely different level of pure hatred for the entire state like I did. It wasn't everyone. Not at all. Still, those who did hate MA (and the residents of MA) REALLY hated them.
