I heard of rock fever. If you come with an open heart and mind, outsiders can make it on Maui. Money alone won't help. Maui used to be more of a healing island. People came here because they were recovering from the Vietnam war, or drugs, or a divorce, or stressed out life style. These people had become so broken down they were open to Maui and Maui people did not judge them. They could start fresh. Some still come to Maui for these same reasons. However, most now come to take advantage of Maui easy acceptance and take advantage of locals and temporary native alike. For those who choose to move to maui, use your head and common sense.

I love Maui, going there every year for vacation for few weeks. Few years ago I did “soft move”: collected money, took few month off from my job … rented studio in Paia... and after few month on island, few job interviews, few offers ... I realized I’m losing more then I gaining by permanent move (at least at this time) and returned back to East Coast … I still love island. Still go there every year.

I just spent 8 days in Maui and I could totally see myself moving from CA to live there...

I won't, but one can dream right?

Maui didnt speak to me.
Oahu to live and Kuai to vacation

One thing that did surprise me about Maui was all the help wanted signs

I haven't visited Maui yet, but here is my guess...maybe it's too expensive for "the help" to live there. The Florida Keys has a horrific problem with that because service people just can't afford to live there, especially Key West. Making the Keys minimum wage higher than the rest of Florida did not solve the problem, so a bus service was started, running daily from Florida City to Key West and back. Also, many employers in the Keys offer employee lodging. Anyway, that's my best guess.

After 36 years, you'd think I would have heard something. One of the biggest problems with Maui, and Hawaii overall, is people attributing some 'magical healing powers' to this place. Folks come here expecting friggin miracles, and, guess what happens, nothing! Just overwhelming disappointment, and the big letdown, followed by resentment, anger, and beggin for a ride to the airport to get off of this damned rock. I've seen it happen more times than I care to remember. Maui, and Hawaii has nothing more to offer than anywhere else, sure, better weather and some beautiful scenery, but that's it. EVERYTHING else, the 'magic' the 'mana', all that crap, is in your own head. I just get sick of mainlanders and the all the BS they attribute to this place.

End of rant

Aloha

A lot of very good points. I'm come to learn for retired people it can work out. For the dreamers of a working utopia, not usually. Going broke even if it is warm usually runs its course.

I don't know about "magical healing powers" but for people who suffer from things like Raynauds syndrome or have sinus issues due to low humidity Maui can feel really nice.
