No person with serious medical conditions should move to Maui - the quality of care is not sufficient.

those conditions aren't necessarily serious but that makes me curious- What is it about the quality of care that isn't good? Being a nurse that is what I would like to pursue.

There is a severe lack of doctors due to the high cost of living - many doctors can't afford to live in Hawaii to the standard of living they would prefer - or they can't afford to pay back student loans and live in Hawaii.

Specialists on the outer islands is even rarer. A specialist you may need may not even exist on an outer island and would require an expensive flight to Oahu to treat.

The hospitals don't have adequate equipment for difficult surgeries. Again, a flight to Oahu may be necessary.

Get into a serious car accident - they'll stabilize you on Maui and if very serious - fly you to Oahu - that takes time and is risky.

Need a transplant - they may require going back to mainland.

Cancer treatment - go to Oahu for that.

etc, etc.....

That does sound like something a person looking to relocate would want to think about. However I do think that is true of many rural areas in the mainland as well. Especially those who live in mountain communities, they can run into situations where they can't be transported if there is a blizzard, etc.

You're right about that. I guess I have the fever too though.... I plan on moving to Maui next month but I would never do it if I had to rely on finding a well-paying job after getting there. I make about $2000/mo with my online businesses and can do that from any place with internet access (that isn't too far from a post office). I do plan on taking on a regular job as well, something in the tourism field most likely. A willingness to live in a small studio or roommate deal also helps.

If Maui chews me up and spits me out with that plan it'll be fine by me.

If you look into some areas in Seattle there's not too much of a difference in prices of things, don't go by city data's statistics, do a search as if you would actually be moving there. I'm positive you'll be surprised. Some people get island fever because where they live (such as myself) does not get enough sun so when they get there they get a natural overdose of vitamin d. Also my overall health is better when I'm in Hawai'i, so for me the pro's outway the con's. Not to mention if it doesnt work out and I have to go home it'll be a cool story to tell my kids.

I feel like Maui is safe, beautiful and has a lot of opportunity in the tourism industry.

As far as cost of living goes, I don't have kids and I don't mind roommates so I'll figure something out

I'm pretty sure I have a bad case of Maui fever but I will at least wait until I can get a job lined up.
