Aloha,
I am a single woman age 44 no kids and have been wanting to move to Hawaii for a while but have recently been trying to do some active research on this. I posted these same questions on the Big Island forum, as I sort of narrowed my choice of islands to BI and Maui, people were very helpful on that thread, so I sincerely hope I can get some good advice from some Maui residents here as well. I'm really curious about the job market first and foremost, then housing, and I plan to do a fact finding trip later in the year before I make a final decision to move.

I have a lot of skills/experience in small office management, customer service, computer skills and I also have a cosmetology license that I know I cannot "transfer" to Hawaii per se, I would need to take the written test once I'm there and that can be a little overlap in time before my license is good to go in the state of Hawaii. But it is a skill set I have under my belt none the less. Heck, I'm not afraid to wait tables or push a broom either.

I don't mind giving up almost all my belongings to make the move, and if I think I could make this work I would come with about $25K to get started. I would live as frugal as I could and make it last as long as possible in the event that job hunting is tough. I currently live in Denver and it's just getting so negative here, nobody takes pride in their environment anymore it seems. It's sad because Colorado is so pretty. Anyway, I've been to Hawaii three times and have always had a desire to try and make a go of it there, and I decided I don't want any regrets or wait until I'm retired to think about it. At the same time I want to be realistic with my expectations and plan things out to help ensure a sucessful move once I'm there. I'd be happy in a small apartment for sure, living simple is good. I'm aware that it would be regular day to day living just like anywhere else, I know it's paradise but I also know that life wouldn't be a vacation there, it would be life. And that's all I want.

I've been reading a lot of the posts here on this city-data.com forum and everyone is so helpful. Would it be too difficult to make this move alone? How is the job market? I'm not afraid to work, as long as it's an honest paycheck. How does one research areas to live? What are some other things I should research and look into when I come over? What are some good questions to ask of the locals? Whatever anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo,
Scarlett Angel
