Looking on Google maps, see a number of back roads with possible connections between Kula hwy and Makena/Wailea.

Wondering if theyre ok to drive, and if so, how safe is it?

Ulupalakua road, from lower Kula to Makena is closed, at least last time I checked. The other road, the Oprah Super Highway, is for Oprahs use only. Not much aloha there. If you want to go from Ulupalakua to Wailea you have to drive in the opposite direction.

Aloha

What about Kealakapu Rd or is that Oprah rd youre referring to?

That's the Oprah road. I believe both sides have a gate with security key entry required. Maui electric gets to go up that road too to access the wind farm up there.

As for the old makena road/piilani hwy. It was closed off because someone flipped their car over along the way, and sued the property owner I think.

Aloha oprah
It is a long trip, when you are right above Wailea, and have to drive the public road around to it. Considering the amount of gas that is used and additional traffic, it's surprising the State hasn't used eminent domain to capture and open the private road.
