If people couldn't afford the rent, then the rent would be lower.

Get a roommate, spouse, or significant other.

honestly I'm seriously thinking about living in a car. I thought I could count on family but all they care about is taking care of themselves in my opinion. they have a cushy well paid job and a place to live while they destroyed mine. I am just a piece of meat being waved in front of wolves.

I now know what it feels to not be loved anymore.

so unless you have lots of money or high paying job and not single coming here is a big mistake!

Aloha!
Most, but not all of my co-workers, friends, family, and myself make more than $43K. How old are you and what have you been doing to improve your life up to this point in time? If you're young enough, and have enough working years left, you may still have time to dramatically improve your earnings and your life. You need to educate yourself so you can pursue a high paying job that can dramatically improve your standard of living. You shouldn't expect handouts from everyone. Improving your life starts with you.

False! Rent is driven up by vacation rentals. The price of rentals isn't determined by what legitimate renters can pay, the market is distorted by tourists

That's in Minnesota... The programmers at the tech company I work at only make about $40k. In the Bay Area or Austin they could probably make 2-3x that

The statement "If people couldn't afford the rent, the rent would be lower" certainly isn't false. You seemed to have lumped "people" as vacation renters.

The market isn't distorted by tourists - that is what makes the market. No tourists, no island economy. You can't have it both ways. The "market" includes people who live there long-term, short-term work assignments, and tourists.

So a person who wants a vacation rental isn't a "legitimate renter"?

You said "If people couldn't afford the rent..."

Were you not referring to residents of the island? Because vacation renters aren't residents. We're talking about affordability for residents, not tourists. There are places that tourists are supposed to stay at, they're called hotels! Oops, sorry I think we refer to them as "resorts" and "visitors".

And most of them are illegal vacation rentals, so no they're not legitimate renters. http://mauinow.com/2012/05/30/new-sh...law-explained/

There are 23,000 renter occupied apartments so that 1000-2000 estimate for total vacation rentals is a big percentage.
