There have been eight attacks statewide this year and 10 in 2012. Hawaii usually sees three to four attacks each year. So the state is going to study the spike...
At least sharks stay in the water so you know when there's risk. We visited Alaska and they have bears there that eat people. Overall, Hawaii doesn't have that much dangerous stuff just out and about. Florida has alligators, Texas has rattle snakes. A whole lot of the mainland has venomous snakes. Poison ivy, cougars, wolves, etc. Sharks are about the only killer critters we get around here although folks do manage to fall off of cliffs and drown even without any critters involved.
Although the things that I'm afraid of on Maui aren't sharks, but those little spiders like black widows and brown recluse here on Maui =P. Especially after I saw a black widow in near my own toilet bowl in Kihei. I've always heard about how we had black widows, but never saw them until that day.
A friend got bit, and had to go to Oahu from the flesh eating bacteria they got after that. I mean a coral scrape flesh eating bacteria incident is not that big of a deal since I don't go in the water much myself, but the toilet? That's our throne. =P
Who knew sitting on the toilet posed a life threat.
