are you referring to the guy on the paddleboard? That was a couple days ago I think. We'll be arriving this weekend, hope that the tiger has left the area. I usually like to drive down to southmaui one day to snorkel Maluaka, and Moanakala.

Just stay away from Manonahu Beach and you should be OK. BUT, obey the following rules when in the ocean;

1.) ALWAYS get into the ocean slightly before sunrise or slightly after sunset.

2.) ALWAYS go out into the ocean alone.

3.) NEVER scan the surface of the ocean before going out, looking for dorsal fins or the complete absence of any turtles where you would normally see some.

4.) BE SURE to go out into the ocean after a heavy downpour, especially if the stormy conditions have left the ocean extremely murky... Lesson being, if the water is dirty, the shark can't see you.

5.) ALWAYS tie an aku, akule, or ahi head around your waist when going out. The scent confuses any sharks that may be in the area.

6.) MAKE sure to splash as much as possible when out swimming. The noise it creates frightens off any sharks.

7.) IF you see a large school of fish in your vicinity, or a few turtles, and they suddenly should swim away, they're only afraid of you,,, not the shark that's right behind you, especially if you've followed #6 and #5.

8.) MAKE sure to wear some shiny material on your person when out in the water. Gold bracelets, Rolex watches, anything that sparkles under the water will deter any sharks from approaching you.

9.) ALWAYS wear black swimshorts or swimsuit with a white stripe or lighter contrasting area on the material. Sharks hate those colors.

10.) IF you have stringently followed #1 through #9, and are still in one piece, rent a moped for a week and drive it up and down Kihei road for two days straight. This should get those suicidal tendencies out of your system..

Hanalei Beach Park closed today due to shark attack - come back tomorrow for your next attack.

In case some people don't realize - Hawaii has Sharks. Some of those Sharks like to bite people.

Um, I don't think there is anyone who fails to realize that. But technically Hawaii has just a few sharks, there are several I think at the Ocean Center.

Friend of mine encountered a big (estimated 12 ft.) tiger shark recently, middle of day, clear water, not far off shore in fairly shallow water Kona side of Big Island.

He's had extensive experience diving and snorkeling in these waters over the past 20 years, and although he admired the

beauty and power of the beast, it really shook him up. No attack, but a very close encounter.

That realization that you're in their world and it's totally up to them whether you get to continue enjoying your day can definitely be eye opening.
