Maui is actually a good place to rent, especially considering the price you would pay to buy, the rents are pretty reasonable.

Or you could look at renting like this:
- Freedom to change your mind on where you live
- No more home repairs, let someone else take care of that
- No mortgage, insurance, yard or condo maintenance fees, establishing water & garbage
- If something drastically changes in the neighborhood or island or economy, no consequence to you except to move if you wish.
- Your asset value never changes.

As a former homeowner, you would probably agree that owning a home can be more expensive than most renter-history-only people would think. Lots of costs involved all year long, not just the mortgage. Renting for a while can often be less expensive, and if you put the 'extra' money away in an account, sometimes it can be long-term better too!

you need to do a search on dog quarantine in hawaii. i'm not sure what your time line is like, but there are some really crazy rules in hawaii about bringing dogs from out of state in. they either need shots so many days before arriving or they will be quarantined upon arrival. i've also heard that it's pretty pricey.

i'm sure there's a few threads in this forum about it.

Hi, saw this post and guessing you can help. I am moving to Hilo in a month from Thailand. I need to ship about 4 large plastic shipping boxes similar to what would be accepted on a commercial flight, weight about 45 lbs. each. I am wanting to ship as cheap as possible, perhaps sharing a container with some one. Or using a reliable shipping service, DHL, AM. EX, or what ever works to Hawaii.
Any inf would be most appreciated. Thanks, Albert

The airline, as additional checked baggage, might be your cheapest option.

Oh my, I look around at all of the cans of paint, fixtures, stuff to repair almost any household item and wonder "what should I do with this stuff". It cost good money and is barely used......
I guess if you rent, ya don't need it!!! I think I will donate much of my stuff to habitat for humanity or something like that. Garage sales in my town are not worth the time of effort....

I've got the dog quarantine thing down. You really have to pay attention to EVERY detail and timeline to qualify. They don't bend da rules!

Good luck, Aloha!
