Rush Limbaugh was the most important political media voice in our lifetimes, bar none. He passed away about a month ago, and he cannot be replaced. By anyone. However, the time and space for his radio program will be filled, starting May 24 - By Dan Bongino.

Quote:
Dan Bongino to take over Rush Limbaugh's radio time slot

Cumulus Media's Westwood One announced on Wednesday that Dan Bongino will be launching a new radio show during the time slot left vacant by conservative talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh.

The program, "The Dan Bongino Show," will broadcast 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET in select markets starting May 24, including KABC Los Angeles, WLS Chicago, WBAP Dallas, KSFO San Francisco, and WMAL Washington, D.C.

"The Dan Bongino Show will tackle the hot political issues, debunking both liberal and Republican establishment rhetoric," the press release described. "As a former Secret Service agent and NYPD officer, Bongino is uniquely positioned to provide commentary and analysis that directly questions the philosophical underpinnings of both the Left and Big Government Republicans."
This should be interesting. I am not all that familiar with Bongino, but he sounds like a sufficiently independent, intelligent and interesting voice to possibly hold a large chunk of Rush Limbaugh's gargantuan-sized audience. Many if not most of Rush's audience regard the Republican establishment in Washington with a degree of skepticism at a minimum and generally with a degree of open contempt. And that is a more charitable view than what they typically regard the Democrat left and their establishment with.

I hope he succeeds. Considering the alternatives, this looks like a good choice.

A former secret service agent who worked with three administrations. Who personally knows and has worked with the Clinton's, Obama, Biden*, et al. Good choice it would seem.

I listen to him almost every day. Dan is engaging and personable and good at expressing his reactions outloud to daily stories.

Ok, so Dan is not taking over Rush’s show. His show is being put into that time slot.

I wonder if anyone will permanently take over Rush’s show? Up to now, they have guest hosts and “best of Rush”. I was hoping for Mark Styne.

They have been continuing Rush's show over the last month, running 'Best of Rush' highlight clips. They have been having fill-in hosts try to do a lot of memorials of Rush and so-on. It is already getting old.

From a branding point of view, it is not possible to have Mark Steyn, for example, be the permanent host of "The Rush Limbaugh Show". In fact, that would be silly, absurd and misleading. Clearly, that show would not be "The Rush Limbaugh Show," it would be "The Mark Steyn Show".

No. Rush's show is over. It is sad, but it is time to move on.

Sad to say, but it is the reality.,

As has been said, it'll be Dan Bongino's show filling that time slot on the EIB. Trying to "Replace" Rush Limbaugh would be doing both Rush's memory, and the new talk show host a disservice, IMO.,

I was kind of hoping it would become the "Mark Steyn show" too. But Dan Bongino should do just fine, IMO.

Dan Bongino speaks:
'Enormous responsibility': Dan Bongino will fill Rush Limbaugh's time slot but insists he will not be filling his shoes

“It’s an enormous responsibility,” Bongino told the Washington Examiner of filling a time slot previously occupied by Limbaugh. “There’s no replacing Limbaugh.”

Asked by the Washington Examiner whether a move to the airwaves had Bongino more concerned about the increasingly aggressive “cancel culture,” Bongino promised to be his typical fiery self on the new format.

“I don’t give a damn about cancel culture,” Bongino said, noting that he had already given those that have tried to cancel him the “double barrel middle finger” with the success of his podcast.

“I don’t genuflect to tyrants,” Bongino added.

I would say you are correct, it needs to be a totally different show.

Bongino just shoots from the hip, without tiptoeing on the sensibilities of the snowflakes. It should be fun. I know he already has a radio show, but I’ve never heard it.

If I am reading correctly, it is actually just a podcast, which means his recordings are not typically not live. There will be some big differences in moving to a live broadcast and also related to the differences in the business model. Also, the network that he stands to inherit from Limbaugh is truly huge - a lot of radio stations nationwide. But if he makes the transition successfully, within five years he could be one of the richest people in the country.
