Good Morning!
My husband is currently in Bartlett having a job interview. We currently live in Madison Heights, VA, small town. My question is this, if we take this opportunity, when we move I will be around 7 months pregnant. I was hoping I could get some recommendations on a good OBGYN and pediatrician. We also have an 18 month old son. Also, is there more than one hospital option for births around there? Here there is only one, I don't mind that, just wondering if it's one more thing I need to research. While I'm at it, any thoughts on safe areas where I might be able to find an affordable rental home? Thank you so much for any help you can give me. My normal worry mode coupled with hormones is making me freak out a bit!

Are you looking to rent a house? If so, there are a couple in a neighborhood fairly near where I live that would run around $1000 to $1200 a month (I'm just guessing at that). If you are interested I'll look for numbers on the "For Rent" signs and PM them to you. It's an area near Appling and Summer (Highway 70) in Bartlett near a couple of parks, a couple of schools, a grocery store (and some other shopping/dining options), the Bartlett Police Department, the Bartlett Recreation Center, and the Bartlett Performing Arts Center. There are other areas in Bartlett that would probably have lower rents but would be safe.

There are several hospitals in Memphis where you can have your baby. Baptist is very good as is Methodist Germantown. We used St. Francis in Bartlett (about 5 minutes from the area I describe above) with our lasts and were very pleased. It's a smaller hospital, parking is easy, and there is a movie theater right next door if your Husband gets bored waiting for you to get it all over with.

My wife uses an OB/GYN near St. Francis that has offices in other parts of town (I think it's called Memphis OB/GYN). I can't personally speak for the quality but she has used them for years and is fairly picky about such things. Out pediatrician is in Cordova but we like them and think it's worth the drive. I'm sure there are good ones closer to Bartlett but we didn't want to change.

Default Thank you!

Thank you for all the info UofMGrad92, I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. We are looking to rent a house, but we are hoping to stay under $1000 a month. I've found a few online, mostly Cordova & Bartlett areas, but I would appreciate you sending me numbers and address too if not too much trouble. But really, only if it's not going to be a hassle for you. Your movie comment made me laugh! Hopefully it won't take so long that he'll need to go, the first one took 10 hours from the first contraction to my son being born. Thank you very much for the hospital info, we've always lived in this area with the one hospital, so it's kind of a novelty to have a choice! If you don't mind, could you PM me the OBGYN and Pediatricians names? I hope to get a few suggestions and then I can research etc. Thank you again for all your help!

I don't know much about rental homes. I'll leave that to the more knowledgeable folks.

You can deliver at The Regional Medical Center (The Med), one of the Methodist hospitals (Germantown?), Baptist Womens, St. Francis.

It'll be easier if you pick an obstetrician first and see where that obstetrician goes.

I'm anesthesiologist at The Med, and would say any of the obstetricians I work with would be good. However, I think only 2 of them see non-high risk/non-Medplex clinic (you don't want to go to the Medplex) patients -- Linda (? -- I forget her first name) Moses, and Edward Lazarus. I don't think they deliver at Methodist, but they do at the other three hospitals.

If you are thinking about Baptist, ask if there is an anesthesiologist in house 24-7. Some people have said they are available but not in house, and the CRNAs run the show. However, I have no proof of this -- just hearsay. If this were true, I would not deliver there.

I may be biased because 99.9% of the time, I know more about a given patient than the CRNAs I work with. As good as they are with the procedural aspects, I would not trust any of them to work unsupervised. If I am fortunate enough to get married again and have kids, I would want an anesthesiologist in house where my wife delivers.

Addendum to my previous post: Whoever you chose as your obstetrician, and wherever you chose to deliver: do the obstetrician a favor and bring copies of your medical records.

I've lost count of the number of patients who move but neglect to bring copies of their records. And when you need those copies the most is in the middle of the night when the offices are closed.

My OB/GYN for both of my pregnancies was Paula Pilgrim at OBGYN Specialists. I believe the hospital they are out of is Baptist East, but it could have changed. They are centrally located on Poplar Avenue. It is an all woman practice and came highly recommended through friends

OBGYN Specialists

Our pediatrician was Dr. David Ziebarth with Pediatric Physicians PC in Cordova. This would be close to Bartlett, too.

I'm still looking for houses for rent in my area or other places in Bartlett I pass through, but oddly enough all the places that had signs don't any more. There weren't many to begin with, but they all went POOF at some point. I'll PM if I find one.
