I'll be stopping through Memphis on a cross country road trip and was curious on a few things. I'll be there for the majority of the day time and staying the night.

- Just like every major city, there is a good side and the other side. When looking for hotels, what neighborhood should i be looking for and what should i not be staying near?

- I'll be doing two popular attractions, graceland and National Civil Rights Museum - Lorraine Motel. Other than those two, I'm looking to experience some local favorites. What are some great recommend local places to eat or shop?

- Anything else a visitor would need to know and you want to share.

Thanks

The first topic has been beaten to death. Just pick any large hotel downtown, and you should be fine. Don't leave valuables in plain view in your vehicle, and don't walk around alone at night. Stick to downtown along the river and avoid staying in hotels in North or South Memphis.

Save your money and skip the Civil Rights Museum. Go to the Memphis Zoo instead.

Eats - Rendevouz and Huey's downtown are good places to eat. You can find them in a Google search.

I'd still visit the Civil Rights Museum if I were you. The Stax museum is cool too.

Also, the Rendezvous is a cool place for an out-of-towner, but keep in mind that many would argue that it certainly doesn't offer the best BBQ in town. It's not bad, but certainly not the best. Try Tops, Central, Interstate, Payne's, etc...for the best of Memphis BBQ (at that point, it all becomes a matter of taste).

I agree, don't miss the Civil rights museum, it's amazing. I would suggest a live tour at Sun Studios if you want to get a taste of Elvis without hassling with the time and cost of Graceland. Hope you enjoy your stay!

Default Memphis Things

Did you mention Graceland. Don't forget about the Peabody Ducks. Take in a baseball game at Autozone Park. Ride on the Main Street Trolley. If you have kids you need to take a shot at Mud Island. Try Bar None on Main Street, good food and drink.

I always like to spend a few minutes at Tom Lee park watching the river and the barges. And for those really adventurous, maybe a good helicopter ride around the city, expensive but interesting.

The Peabody has a great Thursday night roof top party.
