As far as I can tell, it looks like I won't need a safety inspection to register my car. Anybody here want to walk me through the steps to get my car situated next month?

No inspection needed, just did away with that here. You take your title and an ID down to a title office, voila. (may need a TN ID)

You'll also need something to prove your address - maybe two items - give the Shelby County Clerk's office a call first to be sure you have what you need (901-222-2300). Here's their website for more info: Shelby County, TN - Official Website - County Clerk

I don't think you need two proofs of residency to register your car do you? You need that for your license, but wouldn't your license provide that once you have it?

you need two proofs of residency for your license and to register your vehicle and to obtain a TN license plate.

Definitely always call, but don't trust what they say - they don't know anymore than we do! I've been told wrong before. I'm pretty sure though that all you need is your title and maybe 2 forms of ID. If you've already got the 2 proofs of residency because you just got your ID it wouldn't hurt to bring those with you either way.

When you get back from registering your car, please come back and tell us what was required so we'll know what to tell the next person who asks. Thanks!

I will second that. Also bring as many proofs of residency as you've got because you never know when the clerk will deem one ineligible for some unknown reason.

Yeah exactly, once I was told my lease, signed by my property manager wasn't valid because I didn't sign it.

Well, I don't need to sign it I know I'm living there, also, if I was faking it I woulda signed it beforehand. I told her "trust me, I'm not trying to lie about living in Tennessee." Then, told them it'd be months before I came back, and it was.

Just try to bring as much stuff as you can, and still be prepared to be turned away the first time. Just a hassle of life I suppose.
