Is Parkway Village really an area plagued with crime? I thought it looked a lot better than many of the worst ghetto neighborhoods such as Frayser, North Memphis, South Memphis, Southwest Memphis and Orange Mound, I know it's in the orange category as far as the crime map goes and the map was created in 2009 but I'm wondering if Pkwy Village has gotten better or worse since 2009.

It was nice enough neighborhood just 25 years ago, so there hasn't been as much time for weathering and neglect to take their toll. It's probably not the absolutely worst part of town. It's not nearly as abandoned as some of the other areas you've mentioned, but it's bad. In 2009, they still had a big Marriott hotel at Perkins and 240 and there was some hope that WalMart would open a SuperCenter at the old Mall of Memphis site, and the airport (which isn't all that far from Parkway Village) had a lot more activity because we used to be a Northwest hub. So yeah, I'd say it's continuing to decline. Sad to see a street named American Way become an ironic testament to how we dispose of our neighborhoods, but there you have it.

I lived there from 1968-1971 and my sister continued to live there until 4 years ago. She finally moved after growing tired of hearing gunshots at night and being afraid to leave her house after dark. In order to get out she sold an impeccably maintained 1500 sq ft house for $35,000 to an investor. That house would have probably brought $150,000 in Bartlett or Cordova.

It seems that the decline of Parkway Village began when a large public housing complex was built near Lamar and Knight Arnold back in the 1970s.

Still, I think Parkway Village is better than most of Hickory Hill. For some reason, much of the criminal element and thugs bypassed Parkway Village in favor of Hickory Hill. I suppose the newer and, at the time, more expensive homes in Hickory Hill were more their style...

I do notice a lot of houses in Parkway Village seems to have held up better than most of the houses in Hickory Hill, the only part of Hickory Hill I like is the areas south of Shelby Drive where there seems to be less crime and poverty.

As mentioned, Parkway Village was a great place back in its day. I had several friends graduate from Woodale. I've played many a round of golf at Fox Meadows. Today it's not the same, but it's not the worst place in town.

I miss the days when Parkway Village used to have a Mall of Memphis at the north end on American Way.
