Bingo.

Allegiant has made an announcement to include flights from Memphis. This is likely what will be announced today by Memphis airport today. I think Orlando and Las Vegas are the destinations. Good news for Memphis fliers, as this offers more carrier options and helps keep prices low. It's not all bad not being a fortress hub for Delta anymore. Memphis has added Southwest, Frontier, and now Allegiant in less than 18 months.

It's important to note that Delta already has routes to Las Vegas, and Southwest already has routes to Orlando. I don't believe this adds any new destinations (yet), but definitely brings more downward pressure onto the pricing for existing carriers. Memphis is definitely in a better position than Jackson or Little Rock now in attracting fliers who live in the overlapping service area. This is a far cry from 4 years ago, when many people drove to Little Rock or Jackson to take advantage of lower prices with the discount carriers.

I honestly have never flown with Allegiant, so I couldn't tell you if they are a good carrier or not. Maybe another poster can provide some insight...I'll definitely be considering them now. Their website looks good, but I'm still trying to educate myself on their rewards program.

What I really want to see is a new nonstop route to Delta's expanding hub in Seattle....and service from Alaska Airlines. New Orleans just got a direct nonstop to Seattle with Alaska, and I think Memphis can easily support one as well.

I've taken Allegiant when I lived in Knoxville. I took it to Tampa. It was fine and inexpensive. You have to pay for everything, like snacks, but I dont think thats a big deal. I just brought my own onto the plane or just didnt have anything while on board. They have cheap packages from their website that include hotels in destinations that are popular, such as Florida.

The main drawback of Allegiant is they tend to fly very limited schedules.

Judging from their website, service starts in May. Monday and Friday non-stop routes to Las Vegas, Ft Lauderdale, Orlando, and Daytona Beach.

Vacationers rejoice.
